California Cool

The first time arriving in Ibiza felt a little like landing on the most Californian piece of rock we could find within Europe.

The similarities are obvious: the most beautiful natural light, colours, weather — and (why not?) women. The abundance of gently weaving palm trees, ubiquitous swimming pools, endless beaches, and the lingering echoes of long-gone hippie eras.

Balearic Bliss meets Bohemian Bravado.

One could easily imagine boho icon Hank Moody living here, smoking his cigarette and driving off into the sunset in his old Porsche — if it weren’t so far from his beloved Karen wandering around her Ray Kappe house.

Speaking of mid-century modernism, with its sleek lines, airy spaces, and warm, colourful minimalism rooted in a strong connection to nature, we immediately felt there was a connection between these two seemingly unrelated — yet undeniably sexy — outer corners of the world.

Especially the concept of “California Cool” — style, movement, or attitude, depending on who you ask — feels closely related to the Balearic way of living, as it greedily combines whatever it can borrow from different styles and eras in a casually confident, effortless way.

Casual chic.

Dressed up or dressed down, it always evokes elegant, relaxed, and timeless spaces — precisely because it borrows influences from different moments in time, creating unexpected yet harmonious environments, unbound by preset ideas or time-restrained boundaries.

Think Richard Neutra glass houses, Eames’ elegant structures, a touch of Palm Springs optimism, and perhaps an overload of sunshine and drinks. The freedom of spirit, unlimited creativity, and access to resources, talent, and culture make California the perfect partner-in-crime for its little sister in the Balearics.

So it doesn’t come as a surprise that both Ibiza and California have long attracted artists, architects, writers, musicians, and all-round creatives looking to express themselves in the freest and most abundant way possible.

And so did we.

And while we may be sketching homes under the Ibizan blistering sun rather than sitting in an LA traffic jam — although car culture is very much a thing here too — the spirit feels surprisingly familiar.

Turn on, tune in, drop out.
